Divorce is a subject that rarely comes out of the blue. For many couples, there are quite a few signs and indications of a marriage headed towards divorce, from communication issues to hostile behavior. While it may be possible to salvage your marriage and heal from past transgressions, being able to recognize the following signs can also prepare you when divorce is inevitable.

According to Prevention, marriages in peril often entail apathy from both spouses. When spouses begin to grow apart, they must take steps to reconcile and communicate about their needs. If this does not occur, it is likely that each party will begin seeking fulfillment outside of the relationship. This can be exhibited by partaking in separate activities when they are at home, which only serves to divide people even further.

It is also important for spouses to support each other. When one person is quick to belittle or insult the other person, love and trust will quickly erode. Even more damaging is the lack of concern the other party has for the spouse’s feelings. Instead of striving to make the person happy, spouses will pursue the goal that interests them without a second thought about the emotional outcome.

Little disagreements also become more prevalent when divorce looms on the horizon. It is natural for couples to argue, but small arguments shouldn’t result in huge blowouts. When this occurs, it is likely that the smaller issue is standing in for something more significant, such as fears about infidelity. If you want to make progress with your spouse, it is best to discuss lingering issues to get them out into the open. If you or your spouse is reluctant to do so, the next step might be consulting with a divorce lawyer.
